AuDHD Coaching

AuDHD Coaching
Neuroaffirming coaching for adults with both ADHD and autism

Do you feel pulled in opposite directions internally; craving structure and routine while also seeking novelty and stimulation?

Are you exhausted from trying to function in a world that often feels overwhelming, confusing or too much?

Many adults with AuDHD spend years feeling misunderstood, inconsistent or “too complicated” to make sense of. Often, people recognise either ADHD or autism in themselves first, before later realising both may be present together.

AuDHD coaching offers support specifically for the combined experience of autism and ADHD, recognising the unique challenges, contradictions and strengths that can arise when both neurotypes coexist.

I provide specialist AuDHD coaching both online and in person (in Somerset), supporting adults who are diagnosed, self-identifying or exploring whether AuDHD may explain lifelong experiences.

What is AuDHD?

AuDHD is a term many people use to describe having both autism and ADHD.

For some people, these traits can feel complementary. For others, they can feel deeply conflicting.

You may experience:

  • needing routine but struggling to maintain it

  • craving connection while becoming socially overwhelmed

  • wanting stimulation but also feeling sensory overload

  • hyperfocus alongside executive challenges

  • emotional intensity and shutdown

  • a strong need for autonomy while struggling with daily tasks

  • burnout from masking and overcompensating

  • feeling “too much” and “not enough” at the same time

Many AuDHD adults describe feeling as though they have spent their lives trying to understand why things feel harder for them than they seem to be for others.

Receiving an ADHD, autism or AuDHD identification later in life can bring both relief and grief - offering a new framework for understanding yourself while also processing years of misunderstanding, masking and exhaustion.

Common experiences in AuDHD adults

Every AuDHD person is different, but many clients I work with experience:

  • chronic burnout and nervous system exhaustion

  • emotional overwhelm

  • executive functioning difficulties

  • masking and identity confusion

  • sensory sensitivities

  • social exhaustion or relationship difficulties

  • perfectionism and people pleasing

  • rejection sensitivity

  • difficulty regulating energy and capacity

  • cycles of hyperfocus and shutdown

  • anxiety and chronic stress

  • feeling disconnected from themselves

  • low self-esteem from years of misunderstanding

Many adults have spent years trying to “push through” environments and expectations that were never designed with neurodivergent nervous systems in mind.

Coaching can help you better understand your needs, reduce self-blame and build more sustainable ways of living and working.

The conflicting traits of AuDHD

One of the most challenging aspects of AuDHD can be the internal contradictions people experience.

For example:

  • wanting structure but resisting routines

  • craving novelty while needing predictability

  • needing solitude but also connection

  • struggling with change while seeking stimulation

  • wanting to do everything while feeling paralysed by overwhelm

These experiences can leave people feeling confused, frustrated or inconsistent.

Many AuDHD adults have spent years believing they are failing because they cannot maintain systems or routines that work temporarily before becoming overwhelming or unsustainable.

AuDHD coaching can help you understand these patterns through a neuroaffirming lens rather than through shame or self-criticism.

AuDHD burnout and nervous system overwhelm

Burnout is incredibly common among AuDHD adults.

Many people spend years masking, over-performing, people pleasing or trying to meet expectations that exceed their nervous system’s capacity.

AuDHD burnout may include:

  • chronic exhaustion

  • shutdown or loss of functioning

  • increased sensory sensitivity

  • emotional overwhelm

  • difficulty communicating

  • withdrawal from work or relationships

  • reduced executive functioning

  • feeling detached or numb

Burnout is not laziness or lack of motivation. Often it is the accumulated impact of living in prolonged stress, overwhelm and mis-attunement.

Coaching can support you in understanding your energy patterns, identifying burnout triggers and developing more sustainable ways of managing life demands.

Executive functioning and daily life

Many AuDHD adults struggle with executive functioning - the mental processes involved in planning, organising, prioritising, starting tasks and regulating attention.

This can affect:

  • work and career

  • managing household tasks

  • time management

  • maintaining routines

  • responding to messages or emails

  • decision-making

  • transitions between tasks

  • self-care and daily responsibilities

Executive functioning struggles are often misunderstood as laziness or lack of discipline, which can lead to deep shame and self-criticism over time.

Coaching provides practical, compassionate support that works with your brain and nervous system rather than against them.

Relationships, masking and identity

Many AuDHD adults have spent years adapting themselves to fit in socially or avoid judgement.

Masking can involve:

  • scripting conversations

  • suppressing needs

  • monitoring behaviour constantly

  • overexplaining

  • people pleasing

  • hiding overwhelm or exhaustion

Over time, this can lead to identity confusion, emotional exhaustion and difficulty recognising your own needs, boundaries and preferences.

Some clients arrive at coaching feeling disconnected from who they really are after years of coping and adaptation.

Part of coaching may involve rebuilding self-understanding, self-trust and a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a formal diagnosis?

No. Some clients have formal ADHD and autism diagnoses, while others are exploring whether AuDHD may fit their experiences.

How does AuDHD Coaching differ from ADHD coaching?

AuDHD coaching recognises the combined and sometimes conflicting experiences of both ADHD and autism, including sensory overwhelm, masking, nervous system regulation and identity confusion.

Is coaching the same as therapy?

No. Coaching focuses on self-understanding, practical support and developing sustainable strategies for everyday life. My psychotherapy background informs my work, but coaching is distinct from therapy.

Do you work with late-diagnosed adults?

Yes. Many clients I support are late-diagnosed adults making sense of their experiences through a new neurodivergent lens.

"I’ve been coaching with Lauren for about two months, and it’s been a valuable and supportive experience. I’m developing a much clearer understanding of how my AuDHD shows up in my day-to-day life, and feel that Lauren genuinely cares and is cheerleading me on my way. Lauren creates a space that feels safe, thoughtful and easy to be honest in, and I enjoy working with her! She offers a balance of empathy, insight, questions, willingness to adapt and lots of practical suggestions. I’ve had some really meaningful moments of clarity and shift through our work together, and I look forward to more - thank you, Lauren!"
